The RAAF's fleet of PC-9 training aircraft will be progressively replaced by the New Pilot Training System (NPTS) to be developed under Project AIR 5428. This is one of a range of projects recently analysed by the Cost Estimation team in Capability Systems Division. (photo : DefenceGovAu)

A new way of training pilots for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) was announced by the Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner. “The new Pilot Training System will enhance the ADF’s ability to train highly qualified and skilled pilots to operate its next generation of airborne capabilities,” he said. “Over the coming decade, the ADF plans to replace almost all of its airborne assets with the latest generation aircraft, which will require a greater number of pilots with more advanced skill-sets.” The package will produce pilots for the Navy, Army and Air Force.

It is likely that a contract for Pilot Training System will be tendered to private contractors, similar to that recently concluded by the UK Ministry of Defence for its Military Flying Training System. “The government will make a final decision about the new Pilot Training System model in the period 2012-13 to 2014-15,” said Faulkner. “The new system will enter service in the 2015 to 2017 time frame.”
